SREE DURGA PARAMESWARI TEMPLE

Vilayanchathanur is a quiet village situated some 10 Kms. South of the town of Palakkad on the Palakkad-Nenmmara road . The place reminds one of the self-sufficient and prospereous village of old, inhabited by the many rural craftsman. At the centre of this village stands the ancient temple dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga Parameswari whose auspicious presence pervades the whole place like some rare fragrance. It is beleved that temple had seen days of grandeur and glory in its history of over four hundred  years before it fell in to neglect and disuse.

Legends have it that the idol of the Goddess was self -manifested (Swambhoo). The story relating to the mysterious discovery of the idol and the subsequent building of the temple runs as follows. The place was once a vast and dense grassland where   one day a lady was cutting sharp sickle chanced to strike against a hard thing with a grating sound.  Looking at her stickle she was alarmed to see clear blood-streaks on it. Fear-stricken, she ran to report the matter to the elders of the village who, in turn, approached the astrologers for their divination. Their pronouncement was that the place was fortunate to be blessed by the divine presence of Goddess Durga.  When  the place was cleared of the overgrowth, the large-sized self-born stone idol was discovered and a temple for the deity built in good time.

Time no doubt, has swept away the prominence of the temple; but the divinity that is immanent in the deity is still there. Only it has to be awakened by daily worship and prayer. The need of the hour is renovation of the temple as well as arrangements for daily ritualistic worship which involves large funds wholly beyond the meager resources of a small village like this.

Therefore , we appeal to the large-hearted public to offer generous financial help for this noble cause. Goddess Durga is famed to be the all-loving Divine Mother who is not only the remover of all obstacle but also the bestover of all boons and blessing for her children to enjoy both material prosperity  and spiritual welfare. You are cordially invited to participate in the yajna-the renovation and maintenance of this  ancient temple-promising the all-round well-being of the people for generations to come.
